A flower…and a box

“I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgement; and when they can derive sustenance and strength from the relationship.” ~ Brene Brown

Pause a moment and drift along this thought.  “Relationship” has many meanings, including between the dancer and audience.  When I perform, am I dancing only for myself, or is there another level where I form a connection with a person in the audience, or many people?  Do they feel seen, heard, valued?  Do I?  Does the stage create an invisible barrier inhibiting a true sense of connection…or perhaps my costume?  Is there a piece missing, that could make take this experience to a new level, or would this be an invasion of personal space and make many uncomfortable?

I like to watch Ted videos on all different topics, and was very drawn into this musician’s story, questioning what I know, ingrained beliefs, even how I create.  It also makes me think of connections here in SL, and also in RL too.

A challenge to myself – create a dance keeping these principles in mind, a focus on connection where the audience feels seen, heard, and valued.  What will this be, what will this look like?  Can it be done? That remains, unfolding in the act of creation.

I continue to expand this blog, adding notes, resources, for my benefit and hopefully others too.  It is cathartic, thought provoking, and reveals a piece of me to you.  I ride along a gentle wave as I write…letting the thoughts flow naturally, considering, without stress.

Make beautiful music, beautiful art today, with your words, your actions, and your emotions.  Life itself is an art –

Scrambled Eggs, Anyone?

“Draws in a soft breath as I catch the sight of you across the smoky room.   In an interminable moment everything fades from view, everything, all but the glowing form of you…mesmerizing…calling. Time slows..then stops, my breath catching in my throat.  Only the sound of my fast beating heart reaches my ears as a slow grin slides across my lips.  I take one step, then the next…then wiggle my egg shaped rear and bust out a move…”I’m Blue daba de daba di”

Someone reminded me that dance can be taken too seriously at times.  I love creating, enjoy what I do, but it is incredible to jump outside of my “human dancer” box and play with something new.  Working on choreography in this egg costume nearly has me in giggles.  Ever notice how animations appear differently depending on your costume?  Yeah, try booty shaking in an egg costume and see if YOU can keep from laughing!   I am challenging myself, and I really am choreographing this dance to the music…even if this costume would let me get away with nothing but flips, head spins, and butt shaking.

Have an amazing day, be creative, and have fun!

The Sirens Call – a beginning for the new dancer

“Begin at the beginning and go on until you come to the end, then STOP”
     ~ Alice in Wonderland

You feel the call.  Perhaps it was a performance, perhaps an impulsive inspiration from above, but whatever drew you to dance you now have a passion to create and be on that stage.

It can be a little overwhelming, where to begin.  It’s easy to buy the tools, buy the animations but to truly create magic, to weave a store within your performance – the music, the movement, the set it takes a focus on foundation, passion, and dedication to truly bring out your full potential.  Sound a bit difficult?  In a way it is, but in others it’s a most incredible journey where you will learn, you will feel, you will meet amazing people.  You will never listen to music in the same way again.  You will feel it, you will experience it, you will soar with it, and for some pieces of music, you will see it in your head unbidden, just there.

I can hear you now… “I want to create that…I want to be on the stage…what do I need…where do I go????”

Pause.  Breathe.  Slow.

Before we dig into the details, go to shows.  All over the grid.  Experience the different styles, different choreographers, different feelings of each venue.

Every venue has its own feel, its own style, the way the show is run.  Experience it as an audience member, see what appeals to you.  What style of dance are you most drawn to?  What do you enjoy most about what you see?  What is your opinion on your experience at each show and venue?  Keep notes about not only what you did like, but also didn’t like, and any questions you have.  This will help you define what appeals to YOU and if it’s something you want to invest in.

Don’t ever compare yourself.
Don’t ever doubt you could do “that”.
Strive to create from within, and you will find your own style over time.
Most of all, never be afraid to fail.  Never be afraid to try.

Make notes on what you see.  What you liked, what you didn’t.  See how the choreographers use animations to fit the music, how they use the animations.  What music moves you?  Listen to music on youtube, make more notes, again what music moves you.  DON’T WATCH THE VIDEOS.  Don’t strive to re-create the video.  Dance is about your OWN expression of the music.  Don’t doubt, second guess, just free write and let creativity and ideas flow.  Start a dance journal – a notebook, a private blog, spreadsheet, document, whatever works for you.  A place to keep your ideas.

Spend at least a couple weeks going to shows, many different venues, with this new mindset.  Really immerse yourself.

I do suggest adding Club Image to your places to visit.  To me, they are a level unto themselves and a true experience in magic and inspiration.

You’ve been all over the grid, taken notes, experienced shows, and your passion is off the charts and you’re ready to create a dance NOW.

You may be asking – “WHAT DO I NEED, I HAVE ANIMATIONS, WHAT DO I DO FIRST???”

Dance in SL is this unbelievable creative experience.  It does take dedication and hard work to make it worth it in my opinion.  I promise you, you will laugh, you will cry, bang your head against the wall, and spend more lindens than you thought.  There are ways to be resourceful, but creating a dance in SL is not a free hobby.  I highly encourage you to be sure it’s something you feel passionate for before investing.  Do not do it for the applause, do it for YOU out of passion and the need for expression.

Wait, you might be wondering why people do this if it takes dedication, lindens, and even tears…

Dance in SL is an expression of creativity.  The creator may use many different tools to explore and to create in their own way.  Some love building sets, or putting together choreography.  Maybe they use audacity to create custom music files, or put together unique costumes.  Others enjoy working with Photoshop to create textures and pictures for their sets.  Others like the challenge of scripting and creating special effects.  Opportunities for growth and vision are almost endless.

Many of us here in this world have never been nor will ever be professional dancers.  Others were, but now express their love of dance through Second Life where there is no brittle bones or arthritis.  Bodies are whole and strong, and everyone can perform even the most complicated dance moves.

Alas, there is a wondrous beginning, an alternating amazing and frustrating middle, and never any end.  The beauty of dance in SL is the endless opportunity for creativity, expression, and change.  There are no hard and fast rules, there are different opinions on everything, and very few absolutes.  What I write here is based on my own experience and knowledge, and how I learned.  This is not gospel and I welcome input from other dancers.  May a few learn and be prevented from repeating my own mistakes.  Let’s begin shall we?

RULE #1:  Question EVERYTHING.  Well almost everything, EXCEPT rule #2.  There are so many tools, ways to do things, venues, styles.  Never take anything someone says as gospel.  Consider it, try it, see what works best for YOU.

RULE #2: ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS buy copy versions of animations.  When you begin buying animations, you will generally have the option to buy a copy version or transfer version.  Transfer version you get 1 copy of an animation.   If you put that into a dance HUD, there’s your one copy.  If you want to put it in another HUD for another dance – oops, you have to pull it out of the first HUD.  If you delete that HUD – *poof* it’s gone forever, no passing go, no collecting $200.

If you buy copy versions, you can put that animation in multiple dance huds, an animation organizer, under the kitchen sink, and that safe under the bedroom floor.  (Didn’t think I knew about that, did ya?)  Copy versions can cost a bit more, but they are more than worth it for the ease in using them and the ease of mind of never accidentally deleting thousands worth of lindens in a hud accidentally!  Say it with me:  ALWAYS BUY COPY VERSIONS OF ANIMATIONS

But wait – what if an animation I love is only available in transfer version?  99% of the time I still pass it up and always find one that works.  If you MUST have it, make sure you keep it in a special folder, and store your HUD in inventory in a way so that you know never to delete it.  (Name the HUD or name the folder it’s kept in)

STOP!  Don’t rush out and buy a HUD and a slew of animations just yet.

A little madness now and then…is relished by the wisest men

What wasn’t to love about this absolutely incredible weekend?  I am still buzzing with all the creativity, positive energy, and just feel so amazingly thankful for…everything and everyone who is part of my life!

Down here in Southeastern US, spring has arrived!  Blue skies and robins abound, and sun!  I’ve been getting lots of sun thanks to my new RL miniature min-pin puppy.  At 8 weeks she weighs .39 pounds but has the attitude of a tiger and ringmaster all in one!  Reminds me it’s good to be feisty once in a while! When spring finally bounds in and brings the beautiful scents, sounds, and feel with it, I can’t help but be reminded of this little bit:

It truly was a mad weekend!  Milky Way show on Saturday, where my performance “Electric Dreams” went off with barely a glitch!  After I finally opened the curtain…
Note to self:  Always triple check *my own* group tag!  Electric Dreams comes from one of my all time favorite movies – Electric Dreams:  (and I’m totally blissing out on my geekdom right now)

There was fire, there was water, Darth Vader & crew getting their groove thang on, and amazing fun and twisted twerking to Miley Cyrus!  I love the creativity, opportunity for expression, and the ability to explore all different avenues of creation – choreography, animations, building, effects, scripting, music editing, costuming, Blender, Gimp, Photoshop, Audacity, photography, video making…

But wait!  There’s more!

That was Saturday

Sunday was Moonstone, and an amazing performance celebrating Spring and Easter.  I had the pleasure of working with so many choreographers I hadn’t before in such an incredibly moving experience.  Those who saw the show may not have known that my music piece was not the first I’d chosen…only finally finding what inspired me shortly before the first show practice!  Echoes in Rain was my creation which took on a life of its own as I formed and shaped it.   Loosely quoted, when sculptors create they say they are merely revealing the art that already lies within the block of clay.  Their focus is to let it take shape and reveal it to the world.  For me, and for this dance, that is very apt.  Every performance I create is different in some way and varies all over the board, but sometimes..just sometimes…they seem to come to life on their own.  I am the hands that reveal the shape with the tools I wield.  That is the beauty in creation, in art, and in dance in SL.  To have this medium to work with and everyone who supports it in any way.

An amazing thank you to Michael Sweet for creating a video of this show!  It is so magical when a dance I love is captured for me to revisit again and feel those emotions once more.  I streamed {counts on fingers}…six practices for this show?  But performing it on Sunday, experiencing the entire performance and the dancing together after, was surreal.

[Video will go here once I find the link again!]

But wait!  That was Saturday morning

Performing at Winds of the Sahara Cabaret closed out my weekend with tears in my eyes and amazement.  No matter what I create, what I may do, I will always be humbled by the creativity and emotion conveyed by others in the dance world.  To me, this is art, and we the artists of our creations, our experiences, our life, and our world.

Holy shift, Batman!

It’s Friday!  It’s Friiiiday!  The sun is shining, the birds are singing, and my plants are watered and happy as I sit here in my office.  Do you feel it?  That spring energy…the moon as it moves from darkness to light?  It moves toward manifesting into a full moon and bringing new, hopefully good things with it!

Right now the moon is in Taurus.  From a favored website, when the moon is in Taurus it’s a great time for love and the arts.  Think big!  Love is soooo much more than romantic love!

So…as I sit here, creative thoughts are swirling through my head.  A shift coming on, new thoughts, new ideas, new actions and ways.  Change.  I’m not always great at change, but slowly I get better at letting them flow, and letting things shift as they’re meant to.  It’s so easy to fear change, perhaps even of losing something, clinging onto it tightly…but if it’s meant, it will transition anyway whether you’re kicking and screaming or going with the flow.  (I’ve done my share of kicking and screaming.)  I was reminded yesterday, after looking at amazing pictures from two years ago, of one of my favorite Alice quotes:  “It’s no use going back to yesterday, I was a different person then”.  It was so amazing to see the pictures, to remember, feel nostalgic, but there was also a hint of sadness too, for what was.  Those were amazing moments, as there have been since and will be in the future.  Different and brilliant all on their own.  Together, they form the tapestry of our life.  If I feared changing the colors along the way or tried to hold onto that one specific thread in that one specific moment, how could a rich and full tapestry be woven?  It can’t.

In SL, I’ve always been one to have multiple “spaces” – whether it’s on one parcel or several parcels.  I’ve finally realized why I do this.  Each space I create evokes it’s own emotion for me, and shifts frequently.  As a totally mad Scorpio and INTJ, I feel deeply and am very sensitive to emotions around me.  I realize I create what I need at that time.  My home – a place of peace and belonging,  kita gardens – focus of the mind and inner focus, and my shared building parcel – creativity and imagination.  I feel the energy of each, just as I feel the energy of dance, of art sims, adventure sims, and more.  This is one of the things that makes SL so very special to me.  Experiencing this, and meeting different people along the way.  Being open to it all.

I read an amazing quote today:  “Until we dedicate time each day to developing ourselves into the person we need to be to create the life we want, success is always going to be a struggle to attain.”

This is from the book “The Miracle Morning: The Not-So-Obvious Secret Guaranteed to Transform Your Life (Before 8AM)”.  I understand success as my own definition.  I have no desire to be a big CEO, to be famous, or to even be popular.  To feel fulfilled, happy, continue on my path to living my life’s purpose.  That’s success to me.  I strive to read a “life inspiration” book and “spiritual inspiration” book each day, for just a short time each…though have been kinda lax lately (haven’t been dedicating that time!).   A friend recommended this book, and is reading it at the same time.  It makes a big difference in my life, to be surrounded by positivity and inspiration.  This is where happiness flows from for me, and when I feel I create the best dances.

Today begins an amazing weekend of dance shows, of creativity, hopefully tea with a special friend, and new beginnings.

Weave your own tapestry and dance in your own light –

When is it time to put down the crayons??

I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently.  When is too much just…too much?  This goes for everything – not even just dance.  Being me…well..uh…my thoughts ARE primarily about dance!

I love effects, and scripts, and packing animations into a dance (I think 52 animations is my current record).  They are my happy place, it’s like getting that big crayola crayon box with 120 colors and the built in sharpener.  I want to use all the colors!  Then I want to make them glow, and spin, and fade, and..and…

and…what about my dance?  When is the beauty and the emotion of the dance lost amongst the fades and texture changes?  What is that perfect balance?  This is what I’m struggling with now in my current creation.  Will people forget about the choreography, not notice it because the effects pull their attention away?  Do the effects enhance the dance or is it because I love to play and went “oooh”…and other people went “oooh”?

There is a beauty in subtlety..especially with a soft piece of music.  Sometimes it takes a lot of work to create a subtle cohesive performance that pulls at people’s emotions.  One overpowering effect can destroy that.  I will watch, with a critical eye…and do believe I will at least soften my effects in that dance.  Curious?  I’ll be performing it at Moonstone on 4/2.

I’m kinda making a face at the moment, which of course you can’t tell, thinking about tearing into the costume scripts AGAIN and giving my dancers their THIRD set.  “This is the last one, I promise!”

Just wait, I’m feeling blue next…and pulling out ALL the crayons for that one.

Color on!

Particle Stores – Favorites

Interesting thought…the first inclination was to “hide” the stores I use, so that my dance effects can be “different” and “special”.  It took only a few seconds before I totally nixed that idea.  If we don’t encourage support of the particle shops, animation creators, etc. in SL…how long will it be before they close their doors?  So….here’s my list, as a convenient resource for me and hopefully useful to you AND a benefit for the creators!

A work in progress…these are stores I use

  • Buy the free texture prim at the back of the store.  I still cache my effects, but this is great for late arrivals.
  • “I think you have seen the gray box when you put some particles on.
This object “TEX ALL(wear me)” resolve the problem by pre-loading the textures.

We are preparing the next one which follows the particles of “Active Dolphin”.

In the future, we will update some of these in GROUP NOTICE.
The joining to the group is recommended.

Lupe’s Magic Forest & Naturist Island

In creating my current dance I also started thinking about inspiration.  Not just for dance, but anything worth doing.  What inspires someone?  How to re-charge when we just don’t really feel the spark to get started or keep going, especially through the “this is crap” moments?   Being the impulsive creature I can be, I packed my bags, hopped a train, and set up a little choreo corner on a beautiful sim.  Just me, a stay pad, huds on my screen, and nothing else in a beautiful naturist sim.  You know what?  It worked!  I pulled out my dusty titler, put “Lost in Dance ~ feel free to watch” over my head and just let ‘er rip.  Well, golly be!  I DID draw a small and very quiet audience as I worked, I DID enjoy and finished roughing out my choreography, and when I came up for breaks I answered questions from non-dancers about the world of dance in SL.  Bonus!  ~channel Wayne’s guitar riff here~

I did mention I was working at a very beautiful naturist sim didn’t I?  Grins.

Favorite Gadgets

My ultimate favorite gadget.  So simple yet it completely changed how I organize my animations and how I choose animations for choreography

Holds poses, animations, and dances.  Copy animations to each number (right click, edit linked) – my dances are grouped by store or animation pack (for Abranimations).  Stand on the pad and press the arrows below each number, it will cycle you through your dance animations.

Much easier than wearing a bunch of huds on your screen when choosing animations for a dance.  If the owner finds an animation they like, click on the number and choose to get the animation.  It will give you a copy.  I then take these animation copies, dump them into a choreography hud for the dance, and delete the duplicates out of inventory.  Super fast and I use more of my animations this way.

Modifiable – you can change the textures, link and unlink the numbered blocks to add more, etc.

Save camera view positions so you can change your camera view quickly to stay pads, tip jars, front of stage, etc.

Camera View Save/Setup HUD – OL
https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Camera-View-SaveSetup-HUD/5647480

Allows you to save your camera positions so you can easily change views to different areas on a sim.  I keep multiple copies in named folders – one for each venue/sim where it’s helpful.  Bottom row – click and save current camera position to up to 8 view slots.  Top row – change current view to the saved view for whichever view slot you select.  Click again to release your camera view.  If you used your arrows to cam around, use escape to return to the selected camera view.
